There's a Rat in the Mouse's House - Part Two
As Eden and I tagged along behind the Bennet family, more and more people began to file into the park. It was like walking through a school of swirling guppies, and I felt like a shark tagging along after my prey. Eden’s head tilted to the side as we went and she tucked herself under my arm. I liked it when she leaned against me like this. It meant so much for me not to be alone, and to be with someone who didn’t judge me for what I did. She understood me more than anyone else ever had. I wanted to be special and so did she.
“Dad not the castle!” Lyle exclaimed as he hopped up and down in front of Claire like a three year old. “It’s fucking lame.” Ok, that wasn’t quite like a three year old.
“Lyle Bennet!” his mother’s eyes grew wide. “We do not swear in Disneyland. It’s just like cussing in church.”
“It’s ok mom, he’s right. It’s his birthday,” Claire said. She was just so sweet and perky. It made me want to rip the top of her head right off. “Where to little brother?”
“Jungle Cruise!” Lyle grabbed Claire’s hand and ran across the main hub of the park and ran for Adventure Land. “Come on slow pokes. Keep up.”
“Wow, aren’t they cute?” Eden asked. I could hear the hint of loneliness in her voice and knew she was missing the childhood she’d been cheated of. Too many years as a slave to her evil stepmother and then the rest of her hell had ruined hers.
“So, so adorable.” I said with a bright grin. They made me want to puke, but the truth was they probably made me a little sad about my solitary childhood too. I was my mother’s only child, and hovered over like I was made of tissue paper, flawed delicate tissue paper that was never going to amount to anything. “So the Jungle Cruise it is.”
We entered through the façade of a old Calvary fort. To the left was the Tiki Hut, where hundreds of robotic birds sang to a song that the creators thought was a love song, but was actually a Hawaiian war chant about blood and destruction. But then, maybe they had known. You had to have some kind of sense of humor to create something like that.
Eden’s hands were still wrapped around my arm as we walked. I could see the Bennets just ahead of us getting into the long line for the Cruise. It was an old ride. I knew because I’d read every scrap of information I could about Disneyland before decided that it would be the place I had her.
“Make sure we’re on the same boat as they are sweetheart,” I whispered into Eden’s ear giving it a little kiss. I didn’t need to steal Eden’s power. Sooner or later I’d find someone with something similar and then tweak my brain to match. For now, hell forever, she was my partner.
“Watch this.” Eden’s eyes focused on the back of the family in front of us. I could feel as she applied her suggestion from her brain straight into theirs. I’d taught her to focus, making her better than she ever was when she worked for the Company while I finished the illusion that would keep Noah Bennet from remembering either of our faces.
“Oh excuse me!” the woman in front of us stammered as she started squirming back through the line to the exit along with her children in tow. “Potty emergency!”
“Oh that’s classy,” I chuckled into Eden’s soft dark hair. “Potty emergency.”
We were right behind the Bennets now. More than likely we’d be on the same boat around the cruise. It was modeled after the boats used in the Congo, inspired by the African Queen. I did my best not to listen to anymore of their inane prattle. I just focused on the feel of Eden’s hand in mine. She was so tiny and delicate that it was like loving a butterfly.
“Welcome to the jungle,” said the cast member. Disneyland called all their staff cast members. That was something else I’d learned on Wikipedia. “Please step right this way.”
The Bennets followed after a group of Japanese tourists, with cameras clicking and giant stuffed Mickey Mouses under their arms. When Bennet looked back at the two of us, he saw an attractive black couple. They’d never see us the same way twice while we stalked them. Candice’s power had been one of the best I’d ever taken.
“Ganesh is good, Ganesh is great, and then there’s Bob,” said the guide of the boat. To the edge of the lagoon was a statue of the elephant god. I wondered if they’d have told that joke if Mohinder and his family had been on the boat. Would it have been PC then? Somehow I doubted it. The Bennets laughed. They laughed when he shot the “raging” bull hippo too. It was pathetic.
“Here’s something you don’t see everyday,” he popped in again. “The back of water. Unless you work here.” Yep, this was one funny guy. Even if he had a power, I wouldn’t have wanted to dig around in his brain.
When we finally finished the ride, I held my hand out to Claire to help her out of the boat. She smiled at me, just beautiful and beaming as she took my hand. “Thanks.”
“My pleasure.” I was entranced. Soon my dear, soon.

But this is fun.
