Setting: Young Gabriel is watching the Empire Strikes Back for the first time.
It's Not True!!!
It was dark in the living room of our Queen’s apartment. The only light came from the TV screen. On the couch my cousin Margaret was making out with her boyfriend. I didn’t know his name. He wasn’t supposed to be there. But when he’d brought the movies, I’d promised to keep my mouth shut.
I was curled into my dad’s Lazyboy, my knees drawn up while I shoved another handful of slightly burned Jiffy Pop into my mouth. Margaret always burned the popcorn. But she was my favorite cousin and the only one who I liked babysitting me. She would bring me comics and puzzle books, the kinds of stuff my mother would never let me have. Mom wanted me to read Scientific America instead of Amazing Stories.
Think Mom forgets I’m only ten, and that I’m just a kid. A kid who was so caught up in the movie that I’d forgotten to breathe more than twice. The music caught me in almost more than the action. Lando Calrissian had betrayed Han Solo, and Luke Skywalker was leaving Yoda. He had to hurry or all his friends would die! I knew he’d get there in time. He was a Jedi Knight. No one beats a Jedi Knight. Not even Darth Vader.
“Are you doing ok over there Gabe?” the boyfriend asked when I let out a whimper as Vader sent Luke crashing through the window to fall to his death in Cloud City.
“I’m ok.” My eyes hurt because I wasn’t blinking enough, but I was afraid to miss something. I had to pee too, but that didn’t matter. “Who’s going to save Luke? There’s no one left to save him.”
Cringing inside, I watched as Vader came for Luke again, while Luke tried to hang on with only one hand. The music was pounding as loud as my heart when the words came out.
“No, I am your father.”
“What!” I yelled at the TV while Luke screamed ‘No!!!’ “Wait, he can’t be his father. Luke’s good. His father can’t be Darth Vader.”
“Shhh Gabe.” Margaret elbowed the boyfriend. “I told you this was going to be too scary for him. “It’ll be all right. You’ll see when you watch the next movie.”
“I don’t want to see the next movie. I don’t want Darth Vader to be Luke’s dad. He should have a good dad like Obi Won. Having Darth Vader for a father had to be worse than anything. He’d never let Luke read comics. He’d spend all his time teaching him to be special and evil.”
“Gabe,” she glared at me. “Just shut up and get a grip. If you’re upset like this when your mother gets home, she’ll know I let you watch something scary.”
“Ok,” I hunkered down further into the chair. It smelled like my father’s aftershave and made me feel safe from Darth Vader. “I’ll be good.”
