Lie to me, it doesn’t matter anymore
It could never be what it was before
If I can’t hold on to you
leave me with somethin’ I can hold onto,
for just a little while won’t you let me be
“She walks in beauty like the night,” I said quietly as I walked beside Angela through the dark corridors of Level 5. She had a grace about her, not the practiced, politician’s wife’s grace of so many of the Manhattan upper class. No Angela Petrelli had the hidden grace of a predator hidden beneath her Armani Suit and Channel #5. She was nothing like my mother.
My mother who was as faded and gray as our surname. My mother who’s fingers shook when she stroked my face almost as if she was afraid that I was going to bite her, and that was long before I’d become Sylar. The woman had been afraid of me. I could see it now.
“Gabriel?” Angela smiled back over her shoulder at me.
“Being in power suits you. You can thank me later for killing Bob.” I couldn’t call her mother. I was going to need proof for that. Yes I could see that her brain was special, but I didn’t have the ability to see if there really was a match in our DNA. But for now, I would play along with her game. It got me out of the cell, and it got the tube out of my nose. “But my name is Sylar.”
“Of course, dear,” she said to placate me. “It’s just going to take me some time to get used to.”
“I don’t see why. It isn’t as if you were there watching me grow up, is it?” I asked. Angela winced. I can cut with my words nearly as well as I can with my mind. It was good to see her reaction. But she didn’t fear me, not like Virginia did. “My mother was never terribly impressed with me you see. She was always telling me I should be special, and when I was, she…”
“Virginia was weak.” Her fingers brushed through my hair. The touch gentle and warm. “I made a mistake giving you to her to raise. They wasted your potential.”
“Funny,” I said, looking deep into those dark eyes of hers. They were so much like mine. So much like Peter’s too now that I knew the truth. I wanted her to mean the things I saw in her eyes, but I knew what an actress she was. Her eyes could be saying that she loved me, but her heart would be lying. “She was always the one telling me that I was wasting my life following in my father’s footsteps. I’m sure that’ll be a secret though won’t it?”
I backed Angela against the wall, letting her feel my power. A lesser creature would have cowered, but she didn’t. “That’s all right though. I can wait. It can be the golden carrot you dangle in front of me to make me jump through your hoops. But Angela, if you’re lying about this, trust me, it won’t be you I hurt. I will take everyone you love, and I will tear them apart inch by inch while you watch.”
“You are a vicious little bastard, aren’t you.” She looked into my eyes and smiled. “Good, it’s about time one of my children didn’t let me down.”
