Quick Kill - ficlet

I'm hungry. It's been weeks, and I can't hold it at bay any longer. I saw him at the bookstore. He was looking through the cookbooks. I was looking for something new to read. I wasn't looking for prey, but sometimes God smiles on me. It was easy to keep track of him while he meandered through the store.

He didn't notice me when he stepped out to head for the subway. That made me grin. It's been awhile since I hunted there. He dropped in his token; I did the same, following him down to the tracks. If I was lucky, he'd step off somewhere private. The train came, and we both hopped on. He kept to himself, seeking out a seat far in the back.

"Good boy." I sat across from him, wanting to know what it was he could do. While the lights flickered on and off, I saw the reflection in his eyes.

"Can you see in the dark?"

"How did you know?" He jumped, stuttering when he answered.

I raised my finger to my lips. "Don't worry. It'll be our secret."

He was flustered, and I thought he might run. Hoped he would. His power was passive, but it would take care of the gnawing need in my gut. I cut him open between the next two stations. His blood sprayed over the windows, running down to pool on the hard plastic seat. His brain was warm as I slid my fingers in, finding the sweet stop and making his power mine.

No one noticed when I left the train, my hands so red it looked like I was wearing gloves. I took the long way home, sticking to the badly lit alleys and streets to try out my new power. "I like it."
