Dust in the Wind
The air was stale and dry. My lips would have been cracked if it was possible. As I shifted my knuckles brushed against the plastic box they’d put me in. It gave me barely an inch to move about, but the box wasn’t meant for movement. It was my coffin. It was where they’d buried me alive. Hungry and weak, I twisted as far as I could, then drove my shoulder into the heavy lid. It was cracked, and so dirty I couldn’t see a thing through it. Panic set in as dirt came pouring through the broken cover.

I gulped in the fetid air, coughing on the dust, and shoved harder wrestling the lid free. It crashed to the floor, and I grabbed the edges of the container. Rusty needles from ancient IVs fell from my wrists, and what was left of a plastic tube crumbled as I brushed at my face with the back of one hand. They’d kept me asleep for a long time, but until I got outside I had no idea how many years it was. Long enough for their equipment to die.

The lab was dark. I stumbled along in the shadows, my feet bumping into debris as I went. There was no light from outside or emergency lanterns. It was as black as my soul. Voices whispered as I went, each time I touched a wall visions of the past flooded my mind. It had been so long since I’d had to control my powers that I’d forgotten how.

Something popped under my foot, and if bent down to pull something from around my ankle. My fingers tightened on the familiar smooth features of a human skull. I see a blinding flash, and the horizon is filled with a trio of mushroom clouds.

“So they did it?” I said to the dead man. “They destroyed themselves without my help. I bet the Petrellis still found a way to blame me though. Wouldn’t be surprised if Nathan hit the button himself.”

A breeze hit my face, and I turned to follow it out of the bunker where they’d buried me. Bright sunlight came through the hole in the ceiling, and I was blinded for several seconds while my eyes adjusted. Naked as I the day I was born – how cliché – I climbed out of the hole in the world to see what was left.

Swallowing hard, I gazed towards the horizon moving in a slow circle to get my bearings. In the distance I saw twisted girders and shattered buildings. They were so damaged I couldn’t tell what city it was. I set off on foot, not that I had any other choice, to see what this new world would bring. I just prayed that I wasn’t the only creature to survive.

OMG This... This is fantastic! It's a great story... but an even better RP starter!

You should think about writing a little more to this scenario. Surely more than Sylar (and I'm not pointing at Claire) has survived this.

I've always wanted to play out the scenario in an RP, but never had the people to do it with. Glad you liked it.

It would be a very interesting piece... I would think a few OCs would be needed, but it's do-able.

I loved it. Rec-ed it on Twitter ;)

Thank you, sweetheart.

We could do a shared fic - trade chapters back and forth - be cool to find out where Claire is...

You're on! OMG I already have an idea-

If this breaks my block, then I owe you big time!

Happy to help, Sunshine. I hate having writer's block.

Wow! Awesome!
...& yes, also a great place to start an RP from as claire said.
Jericho X-over fic starter? Did you watch that show?
I always wondered if abilities evolved because humans were headed towards destruction. Imagine what a boon it would be to have ppl w/ abilities in your community in a primitive or broken society...
But again, great fic!

Jericho was a great show. It would be a cool crossover.

Glad you liked the fic. There will probably be more.

I should get scapegoat tattooed on my ass, just to make it official.

Thanks for reading.

I could totally see something like the happening. I loved it.

Hopefully he's not the only one left.
