Notes: My first attempt at Gary. He's difficult.

It was sitting on my desk, and it was looking at me. Fat, orange with a gap tooth grin and eyes that didn’t blink stared at me from my in box. I don’t really need an in box. In boxes are for people who use paper, and I don’t need paper. I have the streams to follow, and if I see something important, I put it on the cloud drive. But it was sitting in my empty in box, and it didn’t look right.

I wound my fingers into my wristband as I approached it. Someone had put it there. Someone had come into my office, and they shouldn’t do that because it’s my office. And I don’t like it when people go in my office when I’m not there, and I don’t like it when people touch things. It was probably Bill. Bill liked to touch my things. No not those things. That would be dirty. Just my things like my lunch.

The pumpkin didn’t smell right. I’m not Rachel, but I know what a pumpkin is supposed to smell like, and this one smelled like paper and plastic. But it wasn’t the plastic kind of pumpkin that you take trick or treating. This one was fake. Someone came in my office and they put a fake pumpkin on my desk.

It was too light when I picked it up, and I carried it down to the break room. I didn’t want to go back to the break room. I was already there when I put away my lunch, and now I had to go there again to take the fake pumpkin away. It was staring at me, and I didn’t like it.

Everything in the break room was messy too. There was white gunk stretched all over the place, and it looked dirty. There were fake plastic spiders in the fake webs. I don’t like real spiders, and the fake ones were creepy.

“I do not like Halloween,” I told Nina, who was getting some coffee. “It’s too fake.”

“Usually people say that about Christmas, Gary. Halloween’s supposed to be about make believe and pretend, right?” She sat down and frowned when I put the creepy fake pumpkin on top of the microwave, turning its face to the wall. “You didn’t like your pumpkin?”

“I like real pumpkins. That’s not real. It was watching me.” I turned my back on her and started to wash my hands. “No more decorations in my office, Nina. Not unless they’re real. I have a pumpkin at home, and I get to carve it tomorrow night.”

“Let me get this straight.” She leaned forward, holding her cup in both hands. She had orange fingernails with bats painted on them. They were kind of pretty but weird. “You like Halloween as long as its real. What about vampires and witches?”

“Don’t be silly, Nina. Those are make believe. But pumpkins are real. You should only have real pumpkins.” She didn’t understand. I was used to that. Something on the stream caught my eye, and I stopped to watch that. Then I went back to my office. Now I was late because of stupid fake Halloween. I don’t like being late.

one typo (unless its not)
>but I know what a pumpkin is supposed to smell right,
...but I know what a pumpkin is supposed to smell like,
...but I know when a pumpkin is supposed to smell right,

Loved Gary's voice in this. I'd say it was spot on. Well done!

Thanks for sharing this with us:) Your Gary seems very much in character, even if it's your first attempt in portraying him:)

"My first attempt at Gary. He's difficult."

In more ways than one! Haha. (You've gotta love him, though. :P)

I agree, you did a great job in getting his "voice" right. And your fic made me laugh. :] My favorite line: "Someone came in my office and they put a fake pumpkin on my desk." You can just hear the indignation.
