The Two that Got Away

My breath smoked in the chill night air. Even in Los Angeles you can have cold nights. The alley was cluttered with sacks of garbage, and plump rats scurried about my feet. With a glance, I shoved them further away creating an invisible wall with my telekinesis to keep them at bay. I hate vermin. I prefer the company of predators. My own kind.

The door to the soup kitchen was locked when I reached for it. Inside I could hear only a few people shuffling about as they finished cleaning up for the night. Helping the helpless was such hard work. It was also where my latest project could be found. I’d been following her for days while she asked for signatures, waiting for the right time to rip open her skull and see just how it worked.

I touched the door knob and sent a wave of cold into it. Then I twisted with my hands and my will until it snapped like brittle spun sugar. Stepping into the kitchen was like walking into a blast furnace after lurking outside for so long. The homeless took a long time to go to sleep.

“Come on,” I heard a male voice whisper. “Let’s get out of here Penny. We can go back to my place and have sex.”

“In a little bit.” She laughed clear as a bell. As I peeked around the doorframe I could see her dark red hair and her bright smile. She was such a happy little thing. I almost hated that I was going to have to kill her just to find out what her power was. “I have a few more things to do. Why don’t you go out and save someone?”

Save someone? I moved closer to get a better look at the man who’d been talking. He was big, wearing some stupid shirt with a hammer on his chest. I’d seen him in the papers Captain Hammer. I might not have known what her gifts were, but I knew about his. He was nearly invulnerable, super strong and possibly beyond even my abilities to control. I wouldn’t be able to face someone like him until after I’d taken Claire’s. Until then it would be too easy for him to kick my ass.

“Until another time Captain,” I said under my breath as I crept back out the way I’d come. “I’ll come back for both of you soon enough.”
